Pupils visit Rothwell Library to see Dinosaur

Pupils from Robin Hood Primary School were invited to see the dinosaur they had made which is on display at Rothwell Library.  The children, who are now in the Reception class had made the stegosaurus in the summer term of last school year, when they were in the Nursery.

Spike, as he is called by the children, was made as part of the topic on Dinosaurs.  He measures 1metre tall and a massive 260cm long and was made over two weeks.  Jan Chin, who made the dinosaur with the children said “I was given a roll of sheet wire and told to make a big dinosaur with the children.  I knew it had to have a solid base to support it, so I looked for an old chair.  The dinosaur’s legs are built around each chair leg, and the chair back supports the highest spike.  The wire is then shaped to form the body.  As the wire has sharp edges the children could only watch how the dinosaur was being built, and they were fascinated – asking lots of questions.  They then helped me to put masking tape over all the sharp bits which we called “bandages”.  Then, they were able to paper mache it.  They then painted and collaged it, all the time, using lots of lovely rich language to describe what they were doing.  Spike has sat with us, in Nursery at carpet time until we broke up in the summer!

I am very grateful to Rothwell Library for displaying our artwork.  The children have loved bringing their families along to see Spike and they have been treated to a story by Librarian, Caroline Higson-Blythe.  I am sure every time they pass the library, they will now want to go in.”

Fishes on display at Rothwell Library

Robin Hood Primary School have a display of brightly coloured fish on display at Rothwell Library.

The fish were made by the Year 5/6 pupils as part of their topic on Japan.  They are inspired by Japanese Koinobori flags which are seen across Japan from April to May to celebrate Children's Day on May 5th.

The fish is a carp, chosen by Japanese tradition because it is the most spirited of fish, swimming upstream through strong currents.

By flying the flags to celebrate Children's day they hope to bring good fortune to the children and prepare them for a healthy and good future.

The fish have been painted on to white cotton pillowcases and then the pupils have used fabric paint to create vivid patterns.

The art work is on display for the near future.

Did you notice the owl at Rothwell Library changed colour?

You may have seen the owl made from pom-poms on display at Rothwell Library.  One day it was cream, white, grey and brown - the next day - red, white, green, grey and black.

How is this possible?  This is the second owl, made in school colours.

We swapped the owls, so that the natural coloured one is back in school and the red and green one is on display in Rothwell Library in the Childrens' section of the library.

I visit the library every couple of weeks and staff say both owls have been well and truly stroked, which is fabulous!

Pom-pom Owl on display at Rothwell Library

One of the pom-pom owls is on display at Rothwell Library.

It is in the Children's section of the Library.

It has been on display in the Civic Hall over the summer and is going to be on display for a while at the library.  Why don't you drop by to see it.

The other owl in school colours is on display in school, which we pass everyday.  Both owls were made in school.  We had a pom-pom day on the 1st of March where all the children in school made a pom-pom. The artclub have worked on it's construction.

Pom-pom Sheep exhibited at Rothwell Library

Throughout the school summer holidays, the Robin Hood pom-pom sheep has been on display at Rothwell Library.

It is in the Children's section of the library, so if you are in Rothwell drop in and see it.

You may have been taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge and saw it whilst you were choosing the books...

This was the sheep that was made in school - all of us made a pom-pom - last year, to celebrate British Wool Week in conjunction with Armley Mills.

Summer Reading Challenge at Rothwell Library

Robin Hood pupils were asked by Rothwell Library if they would create some art work to promote the Summer Reading Challenge that takes place throughout the summer holidays.

They asked if the pictures could have a sporty theme and could include the characters that are featured in the "Storylab", which is part of the Summer Reading Challenge.

During this half term Years 3 and 4 topic was Sport. Year 3 had an ideal opportunity to undertake this project whilst Year 4 were at Rothwell Sports Centre, improving their swimming.

The challenge to Year 3 was to draw a character from the Storylab doing a sport they imagine they would love to do.

Caroline Higson-Blythe and one of her colleagues from Rothwell Library recently came in to talk to us about the Summer Reading Challenge during our Monday Morning Assemblies.

Pop down to Rothwell Library to see if you can spot your art work and get involved with the Summer Reading Challenge.  It sounds great fun!
